The Grow With Us planning process is an opportunity for everyone who cares about the future of Lexington County to share their ideas and insight about the future. This planning process will lay forth a framework for managing growth for years to come. The opportunity for all citizens to get involved and shape the future of our community is exciting and will ensure that the future growth of our county is guided by the community, not simply happening to the community.

Our Organization

Lexington County started transitioning from paper mapping to a computerized Geographic Information System (GIS) in 1988.  The GIS team is housed in the Planning & GIS Department.  We provide the following services:

  • Continually maintain and update existing GIS layers.
  • Acquire and develop new datasets.
  • Central repository for all County geographic data.
  • Create and maintain online mapping applications.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to GIS users in the County.
  • Perform analysis for decision making.
  • Assign all new addresses in the unincorporated areas of the County.
  • Maintain and update 911 database and maps.
  • Create and produce graphics products for County projects and events.

Almost everything we do in Lexington County government has location as a common component. GIS is used for economic development projects, competition for transportation funds, emergency services (fire, law enforcement, EMS & Emergency Management), HUD grant requests, zoning, crime analysis, planning, municipal contracts, solid waste franchise contracts and services, identifying the best location for new fire stations, magistrates offices, fuel depot sites, tax mapping, analysis of library services, and much more.
