Appliances, Electronics & Bulk Items

Does the County provide bulk item pickup?

No. Bulk curbside pickup is handled by your municipality or your private hauler.

However, the County’s Centers do accept many bulk items, as long as they are in typical household quantities.

How do I dispose of large appliances (“white goods”)?

Centers accept ovens, washers, dryers, and similar metal items. These should be placed in the scrap metal container at the drop‑off centers, and please note you will be required to lift the items into the container.

You may also choose to bring them directly to the landfill for easier disposal.

The landfill accepts refrigerators for a fee. Please remove all food and liquids before drop‑off. Note: Items containing freon must be taking to the landfill.  (Fees will apply) Ex: refrigerators, AC units, Ice maker etc.

What if the Freon has been removed from the unit?

If Freon has already been removed, you must present a statement on company letterhead from a certified EPA technician including their EPA certification number. Without this documentation, both residents and businesses must pay a fee for Freon removal per unit.

Where can I recycle electronics?

Electronics such as TVs, computers, and monitors are accepted at the Edmund Landfill and the Household Hazardous Waste events. Do not place electronics in household trash.

Are additional carts available?

Most haulers offer extra carts for a fee. Contact your provider for pricing.

How do I get a new or replacement cart?

Curbside customers should contact their municipality or private hauler for cart repairs or replacements.

Do recyclables need to be sorted?

Curbside carts are designated as single stream and can receive paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminum cans, glass (Glass bottles and jars are NOT accepted in curbside recycling roll carts in the City of Cayce, Town of Irmo, or Town of Lexington) and food cans mixed in the cart loosely.

Can I take material from the landfill or any County facility?

No. Removing or scavenging materials from the Edmund Landfill or any of the 11 Collection & Recycling Centers is prohibited under Lexington County Ordinance.

Do I need proof of residency? Are commercial users allowed?

Centers are for Lexington County residents bringing household quantities. Commercial waste must go to the landfill.

How many tires can residents drop off?

Centers accept up to 4 passenger tires. Oversized or commercial tires must go to the landfill or a tire recycler. Fees apply if more than 4 and no more than a truckload is accepted.

Locations - Augusta Road, Ball Park, Bush River, Chapin, Sandhills, Southeast, and Summit.

What materials can I recycle?

Common accepted materials include paper, cardboard, #1- #7 plastics, aluminum and steel cans, and glass containers.

Can contractors use the Centers?

No. Contractors and businesses must use the Edmund landfill.

C&D materials must be taken to the Edmund landfill or disposed of using a private roll‑off container.

What services does Lexington County provide?

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Are fluorescent bulbs and batteries accepted?

Some batteries and bulbs are accepted at all collection centers and the landfill or during HHW events. Never place them in household trash or recycling carts.

What is HHW and how do I dispose of it?

Household hazardous waste includes paints, chemicals, pesticides, oils, and similar materials. These items should be taken to HHW collection events, not Centers or curbside carts.

Are there penalties for illegal dumping?

Yes. Violations of County and State litter and dumping laws may result in fines or legal action.

Landfill Facility

Are commercial users allowed at the landfill?

Yes. Commercial and industrial users are permitted to use the landfill. Standard commercial tipping fees apply, and all loads must comply with landfill regulations and material restrictions.

Can I arrange a group tour of the Edmund Landfill or request a group presentation?

Yes. Contact the Solid Waste Management Team at recycling@lexingtoncounty.sc.gov. Tours and presentations of the landfill, transfer station, compost facility, and recycling center require at least two weeks’ advance notice.

Do I need to cover and secure my load?

Yes. All loads brought to the landfill must be covered and secured. Unsecured loads may be refused or fined.

What are the landfill hours and who can use it?

The landfill is open to residents, contractors, and commercial haulers. Hours and holiday schedules are posted online.

Do I need proof of residency?

Yes. All residential customers must show proof that they live in Lexington County. Acceptable proof includes a driver’s license, state‑issued ID, or a utility bill with your name and Lexington County address.

What can I dispose of at the landfill, and what are the fees?

The landfill accepts household waste, C&D debris, appliances, bulky materials, and more. Fees vary by material type and load weight.

What is a transfer station?

A transfer station is a large facility where household garbage is deposited and compacted before being transported elsewhere.

Lexington County’s transfer station at the Edmund Landfill can process up to 2,000 tons per day of household garbage, which is then hauled to Waste Management’s landfill in Richland County.

Hazardous waste, industrial waste, medical waste (we do accept properly contained sharps), liquids, hot ashes, and commercial quantities at Centers are prohibited.

Yard Debris & Vegetative Waste

Are there size or quantity limits?

Yes—bag leaves and grass; bundle limbs; and follow posted size and weight limits. Curbside customers verify with your hauler.

Does the County offer mulch or compost?

Yes, Organics Management is located on the landfill site and manages mulch and compost sales. Call 839-329-8345.
