Safe Streets For All

Lexington, SC – In 2024, Lexington County was awarded a Planning and Demonstration Grant in the amount of $240,000 through the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. The purpose of the grant is to develop a countywide Safety Action Plan that is data-driven, accounts for populations most vulnerable to serious injury or fatality, establishes a prioritization framework for future implementation projects, and includes leadership commitment to achieving zero roadway fatalities by 2045.

Development of the Safety Action Plan included extensive community engagement through public information meetings and an interactive web-based mapping tool, as well as coordination with key stakeholders, including public safety, municipalities, and South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).

County Council adopted the Safety Action Plan on February 24, 2026.

About the Safe Streets for All program

The USDOT’s Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program was established through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) as a discretionary program with appropriated funds over 5 years, 2022-2026. It funds regional, local, and Tribal initiatives through grants to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries. The SS4A program supports the USDOT National Roadway Safety Strategy and the goal of zero roadway deaths using a Safe System Approach.
